Visit from Rep. Driskell assured Ypsilanti resident their voice mattered

By Letters to the Editor

It meant a lot that state Rep. Gretchen Driskell and the other Washtenaw County representatives came to our district on Feb. 25 to listen to my concerns about accepting federal funds to expand the Michigan Medicaid program. It isn't often that our legislators have the time to reach out to us to hear what’s important; it’s usually the other way around.

This event allowed me the opportunity to speak on behalf of the 400,000-plus uninsured residents in Michigan. This especially is important to cancer patients who, without health insurance, are twice as likely to die in the first five years than those with private insurance.

Rep. Driskell assured me that my voice matters and I am glad I spoke up last night.

Driskell has had 4 coffee hours in the past month in her district (I've seen them mentioned in both print and online media sources), plus been a several of these regional forums. Seems if you want to speak to her ample opportunities exist. I've had one recent email replied to also--so don't see her office as being unresponsive. Most of the uninsured are working--not sitting home. You'd probably be surprised how many people you know fit this description.

Did you see the ad from Cobra, offering "affordable health insurance" for families for just over one thousand dollars a month? Who can afford that? Possibly some laid off school administrators...

OH PLEASE, give me a break. Gretchen was here because she knew the crowd would be friendly the only crowd she ever goes for. I live in Salem Township and I have never seen Gretchen once never knocked on my door, never come to a meeeting, never sent someone from her campaign staff to knock on doors in my area. Gretchen got swept into office in a presidential year and by voters who had the wool pulled over their eyes by the MEA. I see someone new in the seat in 14.

So nice of Rep. Driskell to make a rare appearance in her district. Oh wait, I forgot Ypsi is not in her district. If Gretchen is so concerned about voice being heard, why I have not received a call or e-mail back from her office when I have left word. I understand she is busy and her staff has a lot to do but if you cant respond in 3 weeks there is a problem. Gretchen got lucky in 2012 and she knows it. Annarbor.com one again shilling for the far left.

Is the 2014 campaign underway already? And no part of Ypsilanti is in Rep. Driskell's district.

Most of the uninsured are lazy scammers sitting at home on their warn couches cheering on the worker bees to work more hours and faster because they need MORE! Not much, just more. If the working masses understood how the Social Security disability program is robbed blind by those with minor injuries they parlay into a life on the dole. Every person on Social Security should be audited every year and only the sick remain.

I work, and work hard at that. I can't afford health insurance for my family ... it's the difference between staying warm and eating. That's not really a choice. So, thank you for characterizing me, my partner and our two small children as lazy scammers. At least we aren't douchebags.

The good old days when having a job meant you automatically had insurance are long gone. So many employers don't offer insurance or they do at such a high cost that folks have to figure if it works into their budget or not. If you only take home $300 a week (more than min. wage) , then $50 a week for insurance is a big percentage of your income!

Thank you, Jennifer Belaire, for speaking on behalf of the 400,000-plus uninsured residents of Michigan. I'll be sure to inform the uninsured members of my family that you are the one looking out for them. Are you prepared for 400,000 thank-you cards?
