Washtenaw Christian Academy puts on wonderful event for special ed students

By Letters to the Editor

I'm writing to you to tell you of a wonderful event that took place in Saline on a (recent) Sunday.

In the week before that, I received an email from my daughter’s special education teacher at Saline High School. She had just received a phone call from John Zylka, director of Campus Community for Washtenaw Christian Academy. He had phoned to extend an invitation to all the high school special ed students, as well as the Young Adults program in Saline, to a private dance that the senior class of his school would host on Sunday, Feb. 6.

The Washtenaw Christian Academy was hosting their own homecoming dance on Saturday night with a wonderful Narnia theme, and felt that they wanted to share this winter dance theme with some else in the community. This was such a nice surprise for us, as some of the kids with disabilities never get invited to anything outside of school events.

While at the dance, it was brought to my attention that the senior students at WCA raised their own money to fund this unbelievable day, which included a delicious lunch, dancing and prizes.

I can only express great gratitude towards these caring kids. They went above and beyond the call of being kind to my daughter and all the others who attended the dance. The parents and faculty of WCA should be proud of the seniors in their school. It was an unforgettable day! Thank you!

This was the coolest event! There was not a mom in there with dry eyes. It was truly a Christ centered event--Not one student was offered credit or told it was mandatory- Those that came chose to be there and they are so looking forward to next year!
