Politico: When climate change meeting in Copenhagen flops, blame Barack Obama's China trip

The upcoming climate change meeting in Copenhagen will likely achieve nothing and President Barack Obama's trip to China is to blame, Steve Clemons writes in a Politico Ideas piece.

Clemons says Obama suffers from trying to tackle too many issues, and thus not addressing any of them well enough to make a difference.

Clemons writes that Obama's failure to get Chinese supports for serious, binding targets to reduce greenhouse gases and to convince China to prioritize consumption over production leaves America looking weak on the global stage.

Obama needs to accomplish something to make other nations see him as a leader they should follow, Clemons says. "Obama has pulled off nothing big yet," he writes, "and until he shows an ability to change the way gravitational forces have pulled global affairs out of equilibrium, then the world will resist America’s most benign entreaties to collectively solve problems that face all of us — particularly climate change."

Mr Clemons is partially correct in that Obama is handling many things poorly rather than a few things well. However, what Obama should be doing, rather than traipsing around China accomplishing nothing, is focus on getting us out of 2 wars as quickly as possible and getting real growth in our economy to get people back to work. "Climate change" is an unproven theory and basically a money grab ginned up by the United Nations' IPCC. Thankfully it is dead on arrival in the U.S. Senate.

Barack Obama has not yet learned the difference between being good and looking good...

PRESIDENT IS ACTUALLY AVOIDING ISSUES :

I do not think that the President is tackling too many issues. He is actually avoiding issues that are central to U.S. Policy.United States must uphold the principle of defending Human Rights and must raise the issue of Tibet.President has failed to meet H.H. Dalai Lama during the latter's recent visit to Washington,D.C.and the President has also failed to articulate U.S. concerns about Human Rights violations by Communist China apart from China's support to the regime in Burma and in Sudan.United States must constantly display its willingness to defend freedom and democracy and uphold its own position of being a world Superpower.

Obama is avoding some issues, and is posturing more on others than he should, but the issue of Tibet isn't one of them. Tibet is a part of China, and no matter who rules Tibet, its people become either serfs or slaves. Frankly, there's very little difference between the two.

TIBET IS UNDER ILLEGAL OCCUPATION :

The Land of Tibet came under occupation by Mongols and later by the Communist Army during its 1949/1950 invasion.During 1914, Tibet as a sovereign country signed an agreement in Simla, India and Mc Mahon Line has established the Indo-Tibetan border. It is ridiculous to describe Tibetans as "slaves" and "serfs".

They're not serfs?

Google it: the Dalai Lama said so himself in 1991, describing the conditions that existed before the Chinese takeover.

Dalai Lama:

"The relationship between landlord and serf was much milder in Tibet than in China and conditions for the poor were much less harsh."

Whether it's the Government or the aristocrats and religious leaders, the people are either slaves, or serfs, and you can draw an equals sign between the two. This is a case where Obama is right. We need to mind our own business.

WE NEED TO DEFEND TIBETAN FREEDOM,TIBETAN IDENTITY, TIBETAN HISTORY, TIBETAN CULTURE, AND TIBETAN INDIVIDUALITY :

I have personally known thousands of Tibetans and understand and appreciate their individualistic traits and characteristics. Communist China cannot wipe out this historical identity through its brutal practices. United States has to defend its national interests by strengthening the aspirations of people to preserve their own historical existence.

Obama followed Hollywood's script and became the first apologist president. His reward was being made out a fool on the world stage: witness Hillary's trip to Russia.

Although a noble goal, greenhouse gasses and their affect on climate is a idea in search of proof. China is unlikely to comply even if proven. Hence, Obama needs to pick his battles a bit better than he has.

The Dalai Lama's argument seems to be that his aristocrats oppressed the serf class less than the Chinese do. Either scenario results in the slaves toiling so the ruling class can live in luxury. Because the Dalai Lama's minions might beat the serfs a little less is no reason for Obama to become involved. He needs to get the health care bill passed.

TIBET HISTORICALLY EXISTED AS AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY :

During his visit to Communist China, President Obama has not accomplished anything tangible and has lost plenty of ground. In a publicly announced statement, the President claimed that "Tibet is an integral part of China". The President is entitled to his personal opinions but his views are not based upon any understanding or knowledge of Tibetan History. The President's view is not even based upon the history of U.S. Foreign Policy in Southeast Asia.If not Tibetan History, President Obama may have to spend some time reading the History of U.S. Foreign Policy before making statements which are not supported by Historical Documents. I want to see that Historical Document based upon which Obama has made this remark about Tibet. The best way to stop global warming would be to reduce our consumption of Made in China manufactured goods.I would not mind consuming organic produce items grown in China.

TIBET HISTORICALLY EXISTED TO OPPRESS THE SERFS:

Obama has made many errors, but this isn't one of them. Let the Dalai Lama finance his own castle with his own money, not money exacted by a pound of flesh.

H.H. DALAI LAMA IS THE TEMPORAL AND THE SPIRITUAL LEADER OF THE LAND OF TIBET :

Just like the Pope who is not only a religious figure but also is the Head of Vatican City State, H.H. Dalai Lama is the Head of the Tibetan State. President Obama need to learn about Tibetan Culture and History, and examine the relevant aspects of U.S. Foreign Policy while dealing with Communist China. His attempt to appease the dragon would not address the problem of global warming.

REBBAPRAGADA wrote: "WAR CRIMES MUST BE TRIED BY MILITARY TRIBUNALS :

The description of a 'Military Commission' as a Kangaroo Court is ridiculous. Kangaroo Courts are filled up with political appointees. If the military could be trusted with the task of defending the country, they could also be entrusted with the task of punishing the captured enemy. The precedents in this regard have been well established. At a minimum, the judges are not political appointees.

Rebb is correct. The allegations must be handled by a Chinese or U.N. Military Commission, not Obama. Excellent analysis Rebb!

CHINESE ATROCITIES, WAR CRIMES, HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS MUST BE TRIED :

I agree with Ms.Longfellow on this issue. The Communists are guilty of countless number of crimes committed during the period of their illegal and brutal occupation of Tibet. The United Nations must appoint an International Military Tribunal to investigate and punish the Chinese Communists responsible for genocide in Tibet.
