Winter Break: Is it necessary?
By Stefanie Murray
Education reporter David Jesse wrote this week about Ann Arbor Public Schools working through its calendar for the next two years. In the ensuing comment thread, the question arose as to whether or not the school district should keep its winter break. What do you think?

I'm assuming this actually referring to the *MID*-winter break in February. You probably should clarify that this is not about the break around Xmas. Shephard is getting confused and needs to understand what's really being discussed. Then s/he can go after "working mothers".

This is not about "winter break" for kids, it's about the burden babysitting inflicts on working mothers. This is not even "winter break", it's Christmas break when children enjoy the Santa, presents and the snow. It's not about YOU. As a parent myself, I look around at others of my generation with and often see extremes ranging from micro smothering "friend parents" to the selfish, me-firsters who view their kids as little more than fashion accessories. Enjoy the Christmas Season this year!!

No, we don't need winter break. And we don't need ten weeks off in the summer, either. I'd like to see kids going to school year round, with (say) four two-week breaks evenly distributed. Who does our extended summer vacation benefit? Certainly not the kids.

Hm. Currently 71% of poll respondents say they don't want winter break. One wonders why winter break is still on the school calendar, given its overwhelming unpopularity.
