Ow, that hurts: Research shows that emotional pain of breakups is physical, too
By AnnArbor.com Staff
The pain of a broken relationship hurts physically as well as emotionally, new research led by University of Michigan assistant professor of psychology Ethan Kross shows.
Kross and the other researchers said they found that the same regions of the brain activated in physical pain fire when a person experiences social rejection, according to an article by ABC News.

I fully agree with Joe. What is the part of the brain they are talking about? Could they name the area of sensory cortex that may respond to emotional pain? Which part of the sensory cortex responds to emotional or mental pain? Which part of the brain is involved in generating emotional responses? Who are the subjects of this study? How could they experience rejection and pain by looking at some pictures? If the study was done at U of M, how it was funded? It shows that they are running out of ideas. How did they record the electrical activity in the brain? If I hold hot water in my right hand, the pain sensation travels to a very specific area of the sensory cortex on the Left side. Why should emotional pain be localized in that manner?

Pain is implicit in human existence and Compassion is an instinctive response generated by human nature. But, the problem is, if I recognize my own pain or mental grief, it will generate a feeling of self-pity and not that of Compassion. The natural instinct called Compassion comes into play when man reacts to pain he witnesses and responds to it. Compassion could be recognized as it is both a physical, and mental experience. The bodily experience of Compassion makes an individual pain resistant and increases his pain tolerance. By deliberately practicing Compassion by providing care and comfort to people to others who are experiencing pain, man will be able to resist and endure events that cause physical and emotional pain.

Wow! You need research to determine that? Everybody knows that emotional pain reflects on physical sickness and pain. Tension si not just mental, its physical as it affects the muscles and they become tensed leading to pain. Diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and many other ailments are related to stress and emotional distress.
