Ann Arbor siblings want to party, network and help stop human trafficking

By Ann Dwyer

If your resolutions for the upcoming year include being more charitable, the Nicholas siblings of Ann Arbor have just the right event. What started as an annual After New Year’s Party for their friends has turned into a way to help stop child trafficking.

“There’s really nothing to do the day after New Year’s,” said Jihan Nicholas, one of the party hosts. “As (our party) started to get larger, we decided it could support a charity,”

An entry fee of $20 per person goes directly to the charity FreeToBeKids. The non-profit organization works to rescue and shelter children who have been exploited, abused, and imprisoned with adults.

More than 2 million children are exploited in the global sex trade each year. Many children are also imprisoned with adults for minor crimes and do not receive fair trials, according to the charity’s site.

The Nicholas siblings - Josephine, Jaad, Jihan, and Gibran - throw what they call a “Party with a Purpose” every couple months. The parties are designed to help various charities, with those geared toward children as the common theme, said Jihan, who works in the financial industry.

Adults are invited to join the siblings and their friends for an evening of music, dancing, table tennis, bumper pool, card games, and other activities. Food will be provided by Ronnie Berry Meats and the Olive Garden.

The “ANYP/PWAP Extravaganza of 2010” will be held Friday, Jan. 1 at 3017 Walnut Ridge Dr. in Ann Arbor. The party starts at 6 p.m. Call 734-385-6176 to RSVP or to make a donation to FreeToBeKids.

“As young professionals, we are anxious to make this event a huge success so that we can help as many children as possible,” Josephine Nicholas said in a press release.
