This story has been updated with more information on the man found in the river.

A man was found dead Friday afternoon in the Huron River near the 900 block of North Main Street in Ann Arbor, according to Ann Arbor police.

Police officials confirmed the man was found Friday afternoon, but other information about what led to his death was not available as of 5 p.m. Friday. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, officials said.

Detective Lt. Robert Pfannes said the person was a man, thought to be in his 40s. Pfannes said there are no initial signs of foul play.

The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office will be doing an autopsy that should shed more light on the man’s death, Pfannes said.

Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Geoffrey Fox said the sheriff's office's dive team was sent out to the river about noon Friday to help Ann Arbor with the incident.

"Our dive team went out there to recover the body," Fox said.

Unofficial reports indicate there was no trauma on the person's body.

AnnArbor.com will update this story as more information becomes available.

So this story about underwater dangers in the Huron near Argo dam have been around since I was in HS at Huron in the 80's. I've heard two versions. One says that there are train cars underwater there and the other is about old bridge abutments. Having personally made the jump of off the trestle I can tell you that we never encountered anything of the like. I checked the historic photos on ewashtenaw.org and the bridge has been in its current location since at least the 40's. It would be interesting to know if there is any truth to this persistent tale. None the less I hope they figure out what happened to that unfortunate soul.

I wonder if it was someone using the railroad bridge as a river crossing that fell off. Either that or a bridge jumper jumping off the bridge. That used to be more common on that bridge. We used to wait near the dam for trains to come by and see people (college and HS age mainly) jumping off the bridge into the river. Not a safe thing to do with a dam right there, and old bridge abutments in the river from the bridge that was first at the location before it burned.

UofM, Pioneer, and Huron crew were all rowing out there yesterday. We didn't hear anything about this, although we continued to row. Thoughts go out to the family...

A team of about 20 of us were out rowing here Friday morning 5:30am. The current just upstream of the railroad trestle was unusually fast (than flow on other parts of the river and recent lack of rainfall would suggest). It was also pushing our boat eastward, another odd dynamic. We wondered if there was something askew with the dam. We didn't investigate (very low light),we got the heck out of there, lest we be pushed too close to abutment! Did odd or unpredictable current contribute to unsafe water conditions?

The water conditions in the afternoon were standard when I was coaching. I doubt that they had an effect.

Ok, so how is the move to MLive not supposed to impact content? As of 5 am, Sept 7 - MLive says a 'body' was found and there is no further info. AnnArbor.com says it was a male, probably in his 40s, and initially, no foul play is suspected. That's not identical content. I've just never really liked MLive - mostly due to layout, navigation, font, etc. It's just a hard site to read news on. As sad as I was to see all the problems the Ann Arbor News went through, I was happy when a fairly readable version of our local news became available online. Condolences to the this man's loved ones.

Hi Sue_Z_Q, we're still working on crossing over to the MLive system. It won't be until the 12th when you see everything publishing to Mlive.com/annarbor as you do here on AnnArbor.com.

That's where they always end up in that corner by the dam, that's three since 2008. There is a little backwater there after the current draws towards the dam.

Yeah I run by there most days across the argo dam. Many runners do... I'll be glad when we know more.

That bridge is the train trestle across Argo Pond just above Argo Dam.
