Pittsfield Township board approves contracts with police unions

By Art Aisner

Pittsfield Township's elected officials and members of the three unions representing the township's police employees agreed to long-term contracts, officials said.

Agreements with the Police Officer’s Labor Council and the Police Officer’s Association of Michigan, which collectively represent command officers, patrol officers and dispatchers, were unanimously approved at the township board’s last meeting, Supervisor Mandy Grewal said.

Negotiations have been underway since contracts expired last December.

The five-year deal for patrol officers included a wage freeze for the first part of the contract, with an option to renegotiate terms in 2012, township officials said.

The beginning wage for an officer starting in 2010 is $39,791, and will be capped at $57,331 after five years.

Wages for command staff remain the same this year and next, but can be renegotiated for 2012 and 2013. Sergeants start at $60,777 and will increase to $64,225. Lieutenants start at $65,673.

The board also approved a tentative agreement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, its largest union partner, Grewal said. Details of that pact weren't available.
