Pittsfield, Northfield police to participate in 'Prescription Drug Take Back Day'
Are expired or unused prescriptions taking up space in your medicine cabinet? Not sure what to do with them?
Take them to the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety or Northfield Township Department of Public Safety on Saturday during the first ever "Prescription Drug Take Back Day."
Drop off unused prescription medication on Saturday.
The Drug Enforcement Administration created the nationwide event to get expired and unused medications off the shelves, and also to help stem the increasing rates of prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings.
Both events run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and police say no questions will be asked about the drugs.
Pittsfield police also will distribute information about teen prescription drug abuse and the current trends in designer drugs. The Pittsfield Department of Public Safety is located at 6227 W. Michigan Ave. For more information, call 734-944-1039 or e-mail colemanr@pittsfield-mi.gov.
The Northfield Township Police Department is located at 8350 Main St. in Whitmore Lake.
People don't have to live in either Pittsfield or Northfield townships to drop off medication.
The 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimated there are 6.2 million current non-medical users of psychotherapeutic drugs in the United States. The NSDUH survey also said more Americans are abusing psychotherapeutics than the number of cocaine, heroin, and hallucinogen abusers combined.

The NYT has a story about the proliferation of crime and home invasions linked to addicts stealing pain medications. Home owners are being violently assaulted in the addicts ceaseless quest for drugs. Thieves are even targeting real estate open houses to rifle through the owners' medicine cabinet. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/24/us/24drugs.html?_r=1&hpw
