Unattended charcoal grill sparks balcony fire in Pittsfield Township

By Heather Lockwood

An unattended charcoal grill was blamed for starting a fire that burned an apartment balcony in the Hamptons of Cloverlane today, Pittsfield Township fire officials said.

The fire broke out on an apartment balcony in the 4000 block of Bridle Run at about 12:45 p.m. When firefighters arrived, flames could be seen coming from a second-floor balcony at the building.

Pittsfield fire Cmdr. Sean Gleason said the fire was apparently started by an unattended charcoal grill on the balcony. No one was injured.

"The whole balcony was on fire," he said. "Firefighters were able to stop it before it got into the apartment."

No one was home at the time. A passerby noticed it and notified officials, Gleason said.

The fire, which was determined to be accidental, caused about $3,000 in damage.

They allow barbeque grills but not couches on the balconies and porches? That makes real good sense.
