Pittsfield Township police investigating hit-and-run that injured 13-year-old boy

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Pittsfield Township police are looking for the driver of a white SUV-like vehicle that struck a 13-year-old boy in the 3400 block of Hillside Drive Monday evening.

Deputy Police Director Gordy Schick said the boy was riding on a Razor scooter when he was struck. He was taken to the University of Michigan hospital with a broken leg and possible shoulder and thumb injuries, Schick said.

Neighbors who witnessed the hit-and-run told police that the driver, described as black and in his 20s, got out of the car, looked at the boy, got back into the car and drove off. A black woman was sitting in the passenger's seat of the car, but a further description of her was not available.

Witnesses told police the vehicle had a license plate number similar to BWH9091.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 734-944-4911.

People cut through those side streets all the time to avoid the light. Glad to see they arrested the driver so quickly.

The updated injury list that I received from this boys family is that he has a dislocated shoulder, broken thumb, broken arm, broken hip and his leg was shattered requiring surgery to insert a plate to repair the damage. What a way to start off the summer! I really hope the police catch the driver of that SUV. To do that to anyone, much less a child, is just appalling. I am still dumbfounded that there are people in the world that wouldn't even stop to make sure the kid is ok. I'm just thankful he was wearing a helmet because it would have been absolutely devastating to all who know this family if he were to have suffered traumatic brain injury on top of all of this. Also just my two cents about the area of Hillside that the accident occurred on, yes there are no sidewalks, and no there are no cars parked in the street in this area. People need to be more aware of the children in this neighborhood and SLOW DOWN. I can't tell you the # of times a day I see people tearing down the street at well over the speed limit.

One of the folks who lives in the boy's neighborhood told me that the boy has a broken arm and leg (and I think they also said his thumb is broken). He had surgery, Monday night. I don't think there are sidewalks in that area, which makes for hazardous conditions for kids outside playing and folks driving on that street (and any other street without sidewalks, for that matter). It's warm outside, people. Slow down when you're in residential areas! You never know when some kid is going to dash out into the street on foot or on wheels! Use some common sense. Too bad "an eye for an eye" doesn't apply any more. That driver should have his leg and arm broken in similar fashion and then left to writhe in pain for a while. What a low-life loser.

Not commenting on the particulars of this incident (or the hit and run aspect) but, man, those scooters are difficult to see on the roads. When I see children in my neighborhood riding them, especially in places where there are a lot of cars parked on the street or kids start speeding with them,, I just hold my breath. Accidents waiting to happen.
