Pittsfield Township to choose option for State Road widening by October

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Washtenaw County Road Commission met with community leaders last week to discuss the options under consideration for widening State Road in Pittsfield Township, according to a report in the A2 Journal.

The road from Ellsworth Road south to Michigan Avenue in Pittsfield Township will face one of three widening scenarios, according to the report.

The work may not start until 2015 or later.

The intersection of State and Ellsworth already faces improvements by 2013, in part due to construction of a Costco store in the township.

I thought the proximity of the airport runway prevented the widening of State Road. This was an argument in favor or relocating the runway to the southeast, toward Lohr Road and Stonebridge. So, what has changed? From the article: "Pittsfield Township Supervisor Mandy Grewal said the project is one her administration identified when she came into office three years ago. She said the need is great for the project to begin in earnest." But the Washtenaw County Road Commission website states: "The project began in April 2004 and is currently ON HOLD and may resume at some time in the future." So, in actuality, her administration was not in office when the need was identified OR proven. When she gets as much road built as the Walmart developer did, I will give her some credit.

US-12 Michigan Avenue is maintained by MDOT. It is in their long range plans for widening. They have the environmental impact study completed (2004), but have not done the engineering and right of way acquisition. The entire length of US-12 through Pittsfield has unacceptable backups and non-functioning intersections. State Road does not have nearly the level of traffic or problems, but it is maintained by a different agency.
