Updated at 1:50 p.m.: Eisenhower Parkway and Ann Arbor-Saline Road area reopens after gas leak

Posted on Wed, Jul 18, 2012 : 9:30 a.m.

Ann Arbor police and fire crews were closing down the area near Eisenhower Parkway and Ann Arbor-Saline Road Wednesday morning after construction workers in the area struck a gas line.

When reached around 9:20 a.m., police did not immediately know how big the leak was and were not sure how long the area would be shut down. Drivers were encouraged to stay away from the area.

DTE Energy crews were called to shut off the gas so the line could be repaired, according to police.

Update 10:45 a.m.: Len Singer, a DTE spokesman, said the leak does not appear to be a major issue. Crews are on scene excavating the area to find the leak and repair the failure, Singer said.

There was no time estimate on how long it would take to identify the leak, repair it and then reopen the area, Singer said.

Update at 1:50 p.m.: The area is now open again, according Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush.
