Man apprehended after high-speed chase in Ypsilanti area to appear in court

By Lee Higgins

A man is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon on a host of charges after authorities say he led them on a chase Wednesday that ended when he crashed his car in Ypsilanti Township.

The man, who was wanted on bank robbery charges, struck a Michigan State Police vehicle with his car during the chase, which Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies say reached speeds of 70 miles per hour.

The suspected robber ditched his Porsche after hitting the concrete foundation of a sign at Holmes and Harris roads, authorities said.

The man ran before a deputy Tasered him, authorities said.

The man was wanted by Ann Arbor police on charges of bank robbery and armed robbery.

He is accused of walking into the TCF Bank branch at Briarwood Mall on June 24, handing a note to a teller demanding money, then leaving with less than $1,000, Ann Arbor police said.

The man also is accused of committing an armed robbery at a Marathon gas station the same day, police said.

Police found suspected crack cocaine in the man's shoe at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was taken after the 7:33 p.m. incident, Ypsilanti police said.

Is this a crime that is yet another sign of the economic times? Since when does someone who's able to own a Porsche start committing armed robberies?

As the old saying goes, you can outrun a police car, but you can't outrun the radio.

A friend of mine from high school saw the guy get tasered in front of her house. An exciting way to end a wednesday night, to be sure.
