Police identify driver killed in Dexter Township when van struck fallen tree

By Amalie Nash

A driver killed in Dexter Township during Friday night's storms was identified today as Cheryl Marie Rose of Stockbridge.

Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said Rose was driving with her 11-year-old daughter in the car when her full-sized van collided with a tree.

The fatality occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Friday as Rose, 47, was driving westbound on North Territorial Road near Madden Road, Washtenaw County sheriff's spokesman Derrick Jackson said.

Police originally said the tree had fallen on the roadway when the van struck it. Jackson said today that it's difficult at this stage to say whether the tree fell on the car or if it was across the road. However, Jackson said, several factors indicate the tree fell simultaneously as the car was passing by.

"I do want to make sure to stress that the investigation is not complete at this point," Jackson said.

Rose's 11-year-old daughter suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Friday's storms also were blamed for several fires in Washtenaw County that started when lightning struck homes. No one was seriously injured in the fires.
