Police release composite sketch in attack on security guard at Ypsilanti Township apartment complex

By Amalie Nash

Washtenaw County sheriff's detectives released a composite sketch today of a man involved in an attack on a security guard at Maplewood Apartments in Ypsilanti Township Tuesday night.

Police say the man pictured in the composite was one of three men who assaulted the female guard between 11:15 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police are attempting to identify this man.

The 29-year-old security guard for Ypsilanti Township-based S.I.A. Protective Services & Investigations, which provides security at the complex on Chestnut Drive, was conducting foot patrols when she was attacked from behind, sheriff's officials said.

She was in uniform and is an unarmed guard. Police said the motive of the attack isn't known.

Police said the guard fought back, and the men eventually stopped beating her and fled. She was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.

Police believe the attackers left in a dark-colored pickup truck with a cap covering the truck bed.

Police said the woman was only able to get a good enough look to describe one of the men, who is pictured in the composite. He is black, 20 to 30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall, with a heavy build.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Detective Thomas Sinks at 734-973-4874, the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office confidential tip line at 734-973-7711, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-773-2587.

The Ann Arbor News removes more comments than any other online newspaper on mlive.com. If you even mention that you think your comment may get removed then it will get removed.

Is this complex on a main drag or off the beaten path? If it is the latter, the attackers may live close by. on the topic of the humorous sketch: I remember reading the print newspaper and always getting a chuckle out of some of the crime stories. I always felt the writer was bored or something and would always throw in a strange random comment like "the man robbed the store of $200 and a charleston chew".

@REBBAPRAGADA You started out good but you ended poorly. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" No call upon the authorities or property managers will affect change while those living under these conditions tolerate it.

Oh dear, Amalie. Grow a sense of humor. Magnumpi and I are totally on the same page. I saw that picture and the first thing that crossed my mind was, "Fat Albert." I showed the picture to my husband. He thought the same thing. I'm not trying to diminish the crime or anything, but you have to admit there are some similarities. Perhaps the A2 police need a better, less cartoonish, sketch artist? Regardless, I hope the guard who was attacked heals quickly and finds a better job. And, I hope the morons who attacked her are caught. No matter who they resemble.

@magnumpi...just be careful you don't assume any guilt on the alleged perps...that will also get your behind bumped.. lol...in all reality, this whole "paper" is a lot like the sketch, very cartoonish!

That can't be a real police sketch. In every police sketch that I see, the perp is wearing sun glasses and a hat.

comments are being monitored before even being posted. i too hope they catch this guy. i thought interjecting some familiarities might help recognize a suspect before this happens again. how is this off topic?

What are the guidelines for leaving a placeholder in lieu of a deleted comment? How often are comments deleted on AnnArbor.com without a "tombstone" of sorts? Your "comment moderation guidelines" leave much to the imagination. I would expect more clarity one year into this venture.

@Magnumpi...no worries, some people don't get sarcasm and/or humor. @eyehearta2...too funny...glad the guard will be okay physically, healing emotionally is gonna take longer.

Hey, hey, hey....i didn't think my comment was that offensive/off topic. It's pretty pathetic that this female guard had such serious injuries from three guys. they really need to get them off the street.

We need much more extensive use of surveillance cameras in many places. Get these thugs off the streets.

Magnumpi! LOL! My first thought too! I hope the next two sketches aren't Mushmouth and Bucky or my faith in cartoons will forever be destroyed. Seriously, though, the police need to step up enforcement or do undercover surveillance in this neighborhood rather than release sketches that could be three of my neighbors. I'm just worried that if they were doing the above they would NOT have put out the sketch to scare the perp from coming back.
