Jeffrey Randolph, 49, of Ypsilanti, died when the 2004 Chevrolet Aveo he was driving ran off northbound U.S. 23 near the Carpenter Road Exit shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

The car crossed both northbound lanes of U.S. 23 and entered the median, where it began to roll, Michigan State Police said in a press release. The car came to rest in the left lane of southbound U.S. 23. Randolph, who police believe was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash was the second of two fatal crashes in Washtenaw County Wednesday. A 38-year-old Ypsilanti Township man died when the box truck he was driving crashed into a tree on Whittaker Road near Sea Mist Drive about 7:15 a.m. Wednesday.

"...when the 2004 Chevrolet Aveo he was driving ran off northbound U.S. 23 near the Carpenter Road Exit..." Sympathies to the family. What is frustrating about these articles is the complete lack of information. Cars do not just "run off" of highways, cross two lanes of traffic and roll across the median. What caused the car to do this? Otherwise we have learned nothing other than the name of the fatality. Once again, sympathies to the family.

Sometimes you never know. One witness (the victim) is dead. He can't explain what happen, if another car cut him off or a deer darted across the road and he swerved to avoid an accident. Or maybe something broke, like a tie rod and he lost control. Then again, taking an exit too fast can cause you to lose control. We might never know for sure what happen.

JRW - I think that's the jist of the investigation. At this point, it's not clear. All we know is what has been determined to this point - the car ran off the road and then the rollover occurred. The answers to these questions will come in the investigation, which is barely more than 24 hours old at this point.
