Police still searching for driver who fled from personal-injury crash on I-94 in Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

State Police are still looking for a driver who fled the scene of a crash that injured three people late Wednesday afternoon on I-94 on the west side of Ann Arbor.

The man opened the door and ran after the four-door Honda Accord he was driving collided with a semi truck about 5 p.m. on I-94 near the entrance ramp from Jackson Road, said Michigan State Police Trooper Przybylo. Five people in the car were taken to the hospital after the crash. Three required medical attention and one, a 16-year-old girl who was sitting in the front passenger's seat, had serious but not life-threatening injuries Przybylo said.

Przybylo said the crash occurred when the Honda, which was traveling in the left lane drifted to the right and the driver saw a semi in the right lane. He overcorrected and the car crashed into the median barrier, then ricocheted back across the traffic lanes into the semi.

The occupants of the car, who live in the Ann Arbor area, said the man was an acquaintance of theirs. They said he's from Mexico but they thought he had a Michigan driver's license. They said they did not know why he ran from the car.

Besides the 16-year-old, the injured occupants included a 15-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, both riding in the back seat. Also in the back seat were the children's 34-year-old mother and a 22-year-old man. Przybylo said the back-seat passengers were not wearing seat belts.

The driver of the semi, a man from Cedar Springs was not injured.

Police said the driver has short black hair and sideburns. He was wearing long pants and a blue long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He has a tattoo on the right shoulder. Anyone with information about the man's whereabouts is asked to call state police at 248-482-1211, ext. 293.

That sounds awful! Why did he run? Was he ok? Ann Arbor, Sanctuary City Rocks!!! LOL! I've been placing ads all over the southern boarder on immigration boards & threads to help bring more oppressed illegal immigrants of all kinds to our lovely city. I'm hoping we can show the country and AZ how to treat people that injure our fellow citizens. With kindness & open arms! Our doors are OPEN! Viva Obama!

Wouldn't the correct phone number for the State Police for this area be 734-482-1211 instead of 248-482-1211? As far as I know that part of Ann Arbor is covered by the Ypsilanti post, which is in the 734 area code.

It is looking more and more like this is a group of illegal aliens here in our country. I have seen this kind of conduct-- running away from an accident and it is very common with illegals. Too bad thbis illegal was not deported sooner. Maybe A2 should rethink its position on Sanctuary City status.

Jeez, I wonder if Michigan police officers are allowed to inquire about immigration status when dealing with people that flee the scene of a crash and other crimes? Oh, A2 is a sanctuary city, isn't it? Unbelievable...

My wife and I were in the vehicle behind the accident, and were first on scene/911, etc...my wife is a PA/RN and assisted the 16 year old until EMT's arrived. The young man they are looking for was there at the scene holding the injured 16 year old girl at least until EMT's/fire dept. arrived on scene. It was after that that he left the scene at some point. For what it's worth...none of them spoke English except the 15 yr. old girl who was trying to translate for my wife in assisting the 16 yr. old.

The driver of the car probably never be found. he is probably on a Greyhound, on his way to some other State.

I'm guessing the poor semi driver was horrified. Driving along apparently following the laws and to have a driver do this...wow. I'm thankful that he didn't get injured. I know a semi driver who tried to avoid a disaster caused by a bad driver and injured himself for life by hitting a barrier to avoid killing the car passengers. I am amazed driving interstates how cars dart in and out and around semis. Clueless. Absolutely clueless.

Oh and one more question I thought in the last article that was written about this it mentioned a 6 year old, not a 3 year old was there a 6 year old too? What has happened to that child? so if there was a 6 year old a 3 year old a 15 year old a 16 year old a 22 year old and a 34 year old and the man who fled that would make 7 in the car not 6. Or was the 6 and the 3 year old one and the same?

Did they not know the name of the man they were driving with or how old he is or where he lives? How can you put yourself in a car with someone who you do not know the name of? Not insured not licensed and prob have a warrant out if he ran like that, the most he could have had done if he wasn't insured and didn't have a license would be tickets and maybe some jail time but prob probation and paying fines.

wow, six people in an accord? must have been cramped, especially with the 3 year old in the car seat they surely had for him/her. i'd be leaning hard on the adults to find this guy.

He probably DOESN't have a driver's licence (at all). And no insurance. So who will be stuck paying the bills for all this damage? Do I even need to ask?
