Postal Service may close 27 Michigan outlets, including branch by University of Michigan's Central Campus

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The U.S. Postal Service says it may close 27 Michigan locations - including one on South University Avenue near the University of Michigan's Central Campus - in response to a projected loss of about $7 billion this fiscal year.

The Michigan locations are among about 700 post offices and stores targeted nationwide.

Detroit locations on the list are the Fisher and Penobscot buildings, Harper, Linwood and Old Redford.

Other locations are Flint's Cody, Downtown Financial, Mott Park and North Side; Ann Arbor's South University, Dearborn's Maple and Teleford; Westland's main and Westland Mall; and Lansing's Delton and Merrill.

Also listed are Wyoming's main and Rogers Plaza; Kalamazoo's Arcadia Park; Kentwood; Muskegon Heights; North Muskegon; Saginaw's Wheeler; Pontiac's Phoenix; Selfridge Air National Guard Base; Berkley and Hamtramck.

If they are closing the "OLD REDFORD" branch in Detroit then let them do it. They are good for nothing but stealing mail and packages anyway.

I agree that the majority of the mail is junk mail that goes directly in the recycle bin. It may be time to consider dropping saturday delivery....

lines will probably get longer at existing post offices, but when is the last time you had a first class letter other than a bill? 55 years ago I was getting twice a day mail service to my door in Ann Arbor on Keech Ave during Xmas time. Today I get about l personal letter a month. Rest is junk mail I just recycle. In all small towns of 500 or less I think the local PO should be closed and relocated as a branch PO in a business for about $500 a month.

I wonder why the South University branch is closing, but not Dexter's. I still think that if the Green Road post office were closed, my ZIP code would revert to what it was before the Green Road branch opened.
