Branches from a tree lie broken in the street tangled in wires on North Fifth Avenue just north of Beakes Street in Ann Arbor on Friday evening.

Update: At 5:52 p.m., DTE spokesman Scott Simons said about 900 customers remain without power. No restoration estimate was available. The power outage map was not showing an accurate number of customers without power, he said.

Electrical service has been restored for all but about 1,100 DTE Energy customers following a power outage that at one point affected about 8,400 customers in the Ann Arbor area.

DTE spokesman John Austerberry said it was not clear when service would be restored for the remaining customers. "Hopefully, it will be soon," he said at 4:45 p.m.

The outage began about 2:30 p.m. and affected customers on the north and south sides of the city.

The area still affected is on the northeast side of Ann Arbor and is bounded roughly by Plymouth Road on the south, US-23 on the east and M-14 on the north, according to the DTE Energy power outage map. Most of the outage area lies east of Nixon Road.

The outages may be related to high winds this afternoon, he said.

There were a few reports of limbs down in the city, and Austerberry said those could cause scattered outages.

...but if you drive an electric car, DTE will give you free electricity for it.

Just last week actually had a "courtesy call" from DTE wanting to know what I thought of their service. I suggested they do me the courtesy of replacing some transformers .

I'll add to the comments about perpetual outages from DTE. I live in NE A2 and I've had at least 6-7 since January, and this is unacceptable service. Today's wind was not powerful, and if there are trees around the city that are blocking wires or if there are branches that are potentially a threat to electrical wires during strong storms, then those trees need to be trimmed on a regular basis by DTE. It's part of what residents pay for with their service. I'm very tired of all the outages.

As of now, the map is showing 85 customers in the Ann Arbor area without power. How reliable the map is apparently is anyone's guess.

Isn't it wonderful to save the Planet by using less electricity? An just think, you didn't have to pay extra to do it!

dte is the only company i know that has a floating due date for your bill. it all depends on when they read the meter. to me this is a bunch of you know what. if i was any of those whom lost power i would call dte and tell them you want a credit for the non usage. works both ways.

Yawn. Slight wind and power goes down to this area again. This is such a constant occurrence that the Toyota Technical Center requested a meeting with DTE to address their concerns of losing power on an ongoing basis. UM also has their computer support mainframes for health services in this area at Arbor Lakes. Though a generator kicks in whenever there is a power interruption. Still, DTE has yet to address this issue in as many years. A good newspaper would do a exhaustive investigative report on this issue, hint, hint.

Odd. Contrary to the updated info in this story, the power outage map at 5:11 PM shows 2681 customers without power in the 48105 zip code.

does seem to be a systemic problem limited to certain general areas - older areas with less new development seem very stable, comparatively

Pioneer High school's power was about to go out all through 6th and 7th hour!

Our power went out (in the 1400 block of Broadway) at 2:38. It came back on about 3:15. The "fans" on the DTE outage map are just approximations. Apparently the fans are drawn from various important power nodes, even though the outages themselves are not fan-shaped.

If you want to check the outage map yourself, rather than waiting for AnnArbor.com to update the info, see <a href="http://www.dteenergy.com/map/outage.html" rel='nofollow'>http://www.dteenergy.com/map/outage.html</a> . Note to AnnArbor.com staff: Future stories on similar outages would be enhanced by including the above link.

It's well past time to bring a class-action lawsuit against DTE for these chronic service failures.

Oh I know! What business did they have causing those high winds? The nerve of them.

UFO sightings. The REAL cause of the power outages.

Fewer than 99 customers affected. You can find the explanation of color codes at DTE's outage map here: <a href="http://www.dteenergy.com/map/outage.html" rel='nofollow'>http://www.dteenergy.com/map/outage.html</a>

The purple areas are small outtages impacting fewer than 100 customers.

This brings my outages since May to a total of 12. Devoted To Errors Energy?

I guess I should feel lucky. I have had my power go out three times this summer/fall. However, what makes me nervous is that up until this year I have never had my power go out in the 20 plus years I have lived here (except for when the whole east coast went down..........but that is a different story). Soooooo, what has changed?

Hmm

Fri, Sep 30, 2011 : 7:36 p.m.

That is ridiculous. Something needs to be done about all the power outages here lately
