Power outage on Ann Arbor's west side closes elementary school

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Downed wires caused about 780 customers in the area of North Maple and Dexter Road to lose power, according to DTE Energy.

That outage affects Abbot Elementary, Ann Arbor Public Schools officials said. As a result, the building will be closed on Friday.

Power is expected to be restored to the neighborhood, bordered on the west by M-14, by about 4 p.m.

In that same area, Washtenaw County Sheriff's officials are warning motorists that a felled tree and the downed wires have resulted in some road closings. They're advising alternative routes and have set up a detour.

Ann Arbor police officials said about 8:30 a.m. Friday the area should open back up shortly. According to police, a tree fell down due to the storm Thursday night and brought down wires across the road.

Police said DTE Energy crews were on scene clearing the area at 8:30 a.m. and the road closure was not expected to last much longer. One crew was on scene and a second was en route shortly before 9 a.m., according to police.

Meanwhile, Ypsilanti Middle School also is closed on Friday. Details on that closing were not available early Friday.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Good news for the ice cream social! It's got a new date and time: the Ice Cream Schedule has been rescheduled for Monday, June 3, 5:30-8 p.m.

I drove around the neighborhood last night and again this morning around 7:30 at did not see a single DTE truck to be found. Comcast was there last night repairing their lines. I would guess the reason it takes DTE so long is because they are working elsewhere. This about the fifth 12 - 36 hour outage in our neighborhood since last July. How about updating your infrastructure DTE.

I'm sick of living in the 3rd world country when it comes to electric power. When is the USA going to upgrade its power grid and bury all those overhead power lines like the European countries already have done....in 2100 ? Sure be money better spent then rovers on Mars and bombs overseas.

Invest in solar power panels for times like this. Perfect back-up solution. Then, over time consider ways to go completely off the grid. : D

Electric utilities are regulated in the state of MI, which means you will pay for the cost to bury power lines, not the government. Since it costs multiple times the amount to bury lines, your bill would increase substantially, not to mention the damage caused to roadways and yards to fix and replace those lines. There are already enough state mandates, which costs are passed through to the customer, that force utilities to spend money on generation that is one of the most expensive available.

Have to have an actual bomb and destroy war here in North America to get new infrastructure... who got the new and upgraded utilities after WWII? It wasn't USA. We're lucky cable TV provides such high profits to the investors, else most of us wouldn't have Internet either.

Seriously...be glad you have electricity as much as you do. Visit India...see how often you have power!

you can't handle the truth

You have obviously never visited a third world country.

The ice cream social is postponed, I'm told by the district. All before and after school events are affected. From the district: "DTE is giving us a late afternoon or early evening return of power."

I got a banner add at the top of this story from Consumers Energy with the tagline: "Count on us". Given that the outage is with DTE Energy, I say that is Ad money well spent!
