Power outage reported for nearly 1,000 DTE Energy customers in Washtenaw County

By Cindy Heflin

Power is out for about 1,000 DTE Energy customers in southern Washtenaw County in two separate areas.

One outage affecting an estimated 585 customers was north of Milan Oakville Road and south of Willis Road.

The other outage was affecting about 337 customers south of Saline in an area south of Michigan Avenue and north of Willow Road.

Restoration estimates were not immediately available.

The outages are probably related to thunderstorms that moved through the area Wednesday afternoon, said DTE spokesman Len Singer, but the exact cause was not known.

He advised anyone who doesn't have power to call 800-477-4747 to report it.

A dispatcher with the Washtenaw County sheriff's office said afternoon storms have resulted in a few reports of trees down here and there, but no major damage. One tree was reported down at State and Thayer streets in Ann Arbor. Another was in Webster Township, he said.

A thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 7 tonight.

There are an awful lot of power outages for no obvious reason. Hot day? Expect a power outage. Rain? Power outage. Sun? Power outage. Our power goes down for several hours on average of two to three times every summer. Sometimes in winter also, but not as common. What's with the service? And what is DTE doing about it? A good chunk of money goes to them each month for not exactly exemplary service.

OK, so if you have no power you can't turn on your computer, TV, radio, etc. So I'm glad they are "advising people to call if they have no power" as I'm sure they are telepathically getting this information. That's like putting up a billboard saying "Illiterate? Call 800-555-5555 and learn to read".

Not to mention the 900 homes in stonebridge without power from 5 pm until 1 am. These reported numbers by dte are greatly understated

I keep reading the headline as, "Power outrage reported....". Time for new contacts.

It's rough for the people around Whittaker because most have wells and pumps and thus no water when the power is out. Hope they get it fixed for them quickly.
