Probation ordered for driver in high-speed police chase in Dexter Township

By Art Aisner

A Livingston County man who led authorities on a high-speed motorcycle chase through Dexter Township in May was ordered to serve probation.

Court records show Benjamin James Kohler, 22, was sentenced to one year of probation for refusing to pull over and stop for Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies on Dexter-Pinckney Road on May 29.

Deputies clocked him traveling at more than 100 mph in the 45 mph zone at about 2:35 p.m., reports said. They tried pulling him over near Alice Hill Road, but he sped off when they approached his motorcycle. He stopped again on North Territorial Road, but fled again before deputies could reach him.

Police were able to obtain his vehicle registration and arrested Kohler the following day at his residence in Putnam Township.

Kohler pleaded guilty to counts of fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, and operating a motorcycle without a license, court records show.

He was also ordered to pay roughly $1,200 in fines.

Cops are ticket writers and do nothing to protect and serve. They are a joke and only make money for the government. If your house is broken into they take a report, and no one is ever caught no finger prints are taken, but if a bank is robbed they do the whole nine yards. This is a total shame to live in this world. speeding and not seeing a cop in your rear view bc your doing 100 miles an hour is not fleeing, its having fun on an open road. If someone shows up the next day like hey I think you were speeding, and they offer I plea deal to a poor person you take it bc lawyers cost 300 an hr and the avergae person makes 10 an hr... so do the math and stop being a tool

Absolutely!! We should clog the already over-crowded corrections system with a speeder! Lock him up and throw away the key! Failure to stop for the police? O.K. very bad. Time? Really? With all the rapists and pedophiles(not to mention murderers) walking free? I think a significant fine and probation are sufficient no?

"Deputies clocked him traveling at more than 100 mph in the 45 mph zone "..."one year of probation for refusing to pull over and stop for Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies".. You need to tell us what Judge is out of his or her mind to give this guy probation. We need to know whoever this judge is so we can get him/her out of the courts for good. This guy could have killed someone. Once again the Courts are a complete failure.
