The 5-month-old puppy who Ypsilanti police say was severely beaten with a tire iron last week is scheduled to undergo surgery at 1 p.m. today, authorities said.

The puppy, an Australian Shepherd named Brownie, had fractures to her right front elbow and rear left knee, authorities said. She also had some teeth knocked out, investigators said.

The orthopaedic surgeon is "pretty confident" he can save the two injured legs, said Humane Society of Huron Valley spokeswoman Deb Kern.

Donations to the Humane Society's "Furry Godmother Fund," since the beating will cover the nearly $3,000 surgery, Kern said.

A foster family has been found for the pup.

Eric Jason Rutley, 29, is accused in the attack. He's charged with felony animal torture, assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder and manufacturing marijuana, Ypsilanti police said.

The assault charge stems from Rutley allegedly choking his girlfriend.

When officers searched his Bell Street home during the animal cruelty investigation last week, they allegedly found 10 to 15 marijuana plants.

Rutley is at Washtenaw County jail, being held on $100,000 bail, jail officials said this morning.

I guess it actually makes a difference what your opinion is, and what you think (and I'm not being sarcastic)! I will definitely pray for that puppy, and against the assailant.
