After a rainy and sometimes cool spring, Mother Nature is turning up the heat. The Ann Arbor area could set record highs today and Wednesday as temperatures climb into the 90s.

As of noon Tuesday, the temperature was already 87 degrees, with an afternoon high of 94 expected. The National Weather Service, which said heat and humidity could combine to push heat index values near 100 degrees, issued a heat advisory effective until midnight Wednesday.

June so far is shaping up to be hotter than normal, though there’s no way to tell if that trend will continue, said University of Michigan weather observer Dennis Kahlbaum.

Typically, the thermometer climbs above 90 only twice in June, Kahlbaum said. We’ve already had one day above 90 so far this month, this past Saturday. Also, before today we already had three days with temperatures above 80 in a month when the typical high temperature is 79 degrees.

The record high for today’s date is 94, set in 1933, Kahlbaum said. The June 8 record, 96, was also set in 1933. With today’s high expected to reach 94, we could easily tie or break the record. Setting a record looks a bit less likely Wednesday, when the expected high is 93.

All this hot weather flies in the face of the June forecast from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center, which Kahlbaum said projected near-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation for June. But that forecast could still turn out to be right, Kahlbaum said.

“We have no idea what the rest of the month will bring,” he said.

While some may suffer in the heat, you won’t hear the folks at Kilwin’s in Ann Arbor complaining. Hot weather makes the cash register ring. People flock to the store on Liberty Street for ice cream, soda and lemonade when the thermometer rises, said employee Ellen Miller.

“When it’s hot at night, we have lines out the door,” she said.

Everyone has to make a living and I feel bad for anyone who has to work in this heat. I just want to know what happened to spring?

I have mixed feelings about the super hot days. I used to work at the Willow Run Powertrain plant and when it was this hot we would have to put up with temps in the plant over 120. And before someone else says it, yes I know it was my choice to work there. That said even then I'd rather have warm weather over cold.
