A 34-year-old man died after he and a 2-year-old girl were pulled from the 41-degree waters of Whitmore Lake this afternoon following a boating accident. The girl, believed to be his daughter, is in critical condition at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

The Whitmore Lake man was declared dead at 2:30 p.m. today at U-M Hospital, said Green Oak Township Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Gentry.

Both the man and the girl were unconscious when they were found, authorities said at a 12:30 p.m. news conference.

Witnesses said the two fell out of a boat after it began spinning out of control this morning.

The girl was wearing a life jacket and was in the water an estimated 16 to 20 minutes before being pulled out by a husband and wife who used a paddle boat to go out on the lake and pull her aboard at about 11:15 a.m., according to a statement from Green Oak Township police released at 3:30 p.m. Another resident in a motorized boat helped the couple bring the girl to shore.

A 14-foot aluminum fishing boat, center, went out of control today on Whitmore Lake, ejecting its passengers, a man and a young girl.

The man was in the water for an estimated hour and 15 minutes, authorities said. He was rescued at about 12:15 p.m. by the Livingston County dive team in 10 to 15 feet of water. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Gentry said when crews arrived, the boat, a 14-foot aluminum fishing boat, was upright and spinning out of control. The incident was reported at 10:54 a.m. and 911 callers reported hearing screams from the water.

Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office spokesman Derrick Jackson said the Marine Division was also called to help. Other agencies at the scene were Northfield Township police and fire, Livingston County dive team members, and Michigan State Police.

Karelyn Munro, a waitress at Whitmore Lake Tavern, 9839 Main St., said a lot of people in the restaurant saw the accident. The tavern overlooks the lake near the 8-Mile Road exit off US-23.

She said a small aluminum fishing boat with an outboard motor started spinning around and a man and a child fell into the water.

Tavern owner Tom Lombardi said there are very few boats in the water for the season, so there were no boats immediately available to go out.

Lombardi said a police officer was also having breakfast and ran out immediately to help.

Rick Carlington, 48, owner of Rick's Bait Shack, 9815 Main St., said his wife called him after she left the store to get breakfast and saw a boat in the middle of the lake doing doughnuts.

Carlington hurried outside and saw what appeared to be a person in the water, he said. He ran to a nearby marina, where he found keys to a boat that several citizens took out to help rescuers.

"I felt really, really bad because I didn't have my boat ... but I helped out all I could," he said.

The man who died is a regular customer at the bait shop who has lived on the lake for a year and often goes fishing on weekends, Carlington said. Sometimes the man takes his daughter with him, Carlington said. He thought the girl was about 4. Carlington suspects the man was fishing for crappie.

"He wouldn't be out in this cold weather if he wasn't an avid fisherman," Carlington said.

This story has been updated with additional details, interviews, and photos. Staff writer Lee Higgins and staff photographer Melanie Maxwell contributed reporting from the scene.

AA.com, you removed my comment questioning whether this avid fisherman was wearing a PFD. You misread the comment. It wasn't a dig at the victim of this tragedy, it was a question for YOU, AA.COM that should have been answered in your "reporting".

You are correct, that detail was not there when I made the original comment. Therefore the appropriate response would've be similar to yours rather than deleting the comment. Best not to expect much from the Canucks in the evenings and weekends I suppose...what with the language difference

Ricebrnr, the story states that the man was not wearing a life vest. You may have seen an earlier version of the story that did not include that detail. The story was updated several times as the events evolved and more information became available.

I'm very sorry for the family of the man and child. My heart goes out to the mother/wife, and may the child be strong enough to survive this accident. I wonder if the police will be able to figure out why the boat started spinning out of control? I can't say I've ever heard that happening before.

So very sad. My condolences to the family. I'm sure this man was a good father and did everything he could to save his daughter.

I am praying for that little girl. Children have the ability to bounce back from the seemingly impossible.

A terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the family. I hope the young child is OK! This is a reminder to all of us to wear life jackets. Particularly when the water is cold. Hitting cold water takes your breath away - literally. Even if you normally can swim, the cold can disable you more than you may realize. I suspect only the strongest swimmer could survive in 41F water but only after serious conditioning.

I feel terrible for the young girl. Hopefully she has a very strong mother. Thoughts and prayers are with the family.

This is a horrible tragedy. Parents, please make sure your child learns to swim. If you are a non-swimmer or are phobic, contact annarbor.com and I will teach you to swim at no charge. (former Competitive swimmer, I was Head Coach of the Ann Arbor Y in the 80s and early 90s and originated a program called "Chicken of the Sea".) I am serious.

@MikeyP I used this opportunity to stress the importance of learning to swim. My offer of free lessons is still out there. One person has already taken me up on it. :P

What a wonderful offer you are willing to provide for those of us who know we couldn't survive on our own. If I still lived there I certainly would take you up on it. I personally don't think I could save myself if my life depended on it. For those of you like me, take this woman up on it!

Good advice (teaching kids how to swim) but given the water temp even that wouldn't have helped much. At those temps hypothermia sets in quickly... your dexterity is shot in less than five minutes, you could be unconscious in 15-30 minutes and after 90 minutes there's little chance of survival. There's a reason very few people had their boats out on the water... it's WAY to early to be out there on a boat! No crappie is worth the risks given the temps involved. It snowed this morning! I'm a pretty avid fisherman, NO WAY you'd find me out on the water today.

Lets hope and pray that the very cold water temperature saves the lives of the baby and the man.

Actually, you are quite wrong. I work in one of the ICU's at the U of M and we use Innercool systems (<a href="http://www.healthcare.philips.com/main/products/temperature_modulation_therapy/index.wpd)" rel='nofollow'>http://www.healthcare.philips.com/main/products/temperature_modulation_therapy/index.wpd)</a> often. They are quite sucessful in helping save lives in people that have stroke, heart disease and anoxic brain injury. Please update your own knowledge base before telling someone that really knows how wrong they are.

@Matt. It is rare that cold water will save an adult. VERY rare.

Matt Cooper

Mon, Apr 4, 2011 : 2:34 p.m.

Actually yes it can. The cold lowers the body temp., which lowers the metabolic rate. If it's cold enough it can actually stop or reduce the amount of brain damage. Induced hypothermia is one treatment commonly used to also stop cardiac muscle damage post-MI.

Unfortunately cold water cannot save an adult. It might have helped the toddler...Sending Blessings to this family...

I watched the rescue from my window - the teams were incredibly prompt and even heroic in giving these two even a chance to survive. The adult, without a life jacket, was underwater before they could even get anyone out there - remember, there was not another boat on the water to help them when they went in. As I said earlier, pray for them. - mike
