Richard Weigel named new superintendent of Niles Community Schools

By Erica Hobbs

Richard Weigel, Ypsilanti Public Schools’ assistant superintendent for educational quality, is the new superintendent at Niles Community Schools.

The Niles Board of Education unanimously voted to select Weigel to lead its 4,000-student district.

“I am excited and looking forward to being in the Niles school community to work with their board of education, the administrative team and the wonderful, dedicated teachers in that district,” Weigel said in a statement.

Weigel has been working for Ypsilanti Public Schools since 2005, where he has overseen the district’s curriculum, state and federal programs, professional development, assessments and relationships with the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University.

He also helped introduce the district’s New Tech High School model and Cyber School pilot programs that will launch this fall.

“I’m proud of the work we have done in Ypsilanti. I will miss the people I’ve had the privilege to work with who are dedicated to students and helping them to reach their full academic potential,” he said in a statement. “Ypsilanti Public Schools is leading the county in many of the important initiatives that are moving the school district into the 21st century.”

Weigel was a finalist for the Ypsilanti superintendent post last year. The board ultimately chose current Superintendent Dedrick Martin.

Congrats! We will miss Mr. Weigel. He has accomplished many good things while in Ypsi. Maybe the new consultant can focus some on the social studies and science curriculum's in the school district. Sorely missed and not addressed for years.

Congratulations to Richard. Ypsilanti's short-sightedness is Niles' gain. I just hope the wonderful programs and partnerships he began here do not go by the wayside when he leaves.

Congratulations. Hopefully all the initiative ideas you started will come to fruition you will be missed. Good luck with your new position Im sure Niles needs you more than Ypsilanti during these difficult times. You have to wonder if your post at Ypsilanti will ever be replaced. Dont be a stranger collaboration is good for the sole.

We in Ypsi were lucky to have had Mr. Weigel for as long as we did. The district has suffered a tremendous loss, and the repercussions will likely be felt for years. While here, he shared his vision with many others, and trained them to be good leaders as well. My hope is that his work will be supported and built upon by those who remain. Best wishes to you, Richard Weigel. I hope you have found a district that will appreciate you better than ours did.
