Officials from Ann Arbor venture capitalist Rick Snyder's campaign for governor said tonight that they're "80 percent confident" Snyder will win the Republican nomination.

Jeff Barnes, director of operations for the campaign, told a cheering crowd of a few hundred supporters at the Marriott hotel in Ypsilanti that the campaign is encouraged by early poll results.

With 7 percent of precincts reporting, Snyder had 35 percent of the vote, compared to 28 percent for U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra and 26 percent for Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox.

Art Holst, a retired NFL referee who rallied the crowd this evening, said “Governor Snyder” would be a “stepping stone for the future of Michigan.”
