Ring in the New Year with cheer — not a hangover

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Dr. Joel Saper, founder and director of the Michigan Head-Pain and Neurological Institute in Ann Arbor, tells ABC News for a story today a bit about the anatomy of a hangover.

It's a biology lesson many people will learn the hard way tonight as they ring in the New Year with a few drinks. As anyone who's had a hangover knows, it usually comes with a headache, nausea, excessive fatigue and dehydration.

Saber explains to ABC that not everyone experiences a hangover the same — age, genetics, medications, diet, immune systems, weight and gender all can come into play.

The ABC News story offers a few good lessons and myth busters for partygoers, such as the myth that drinking the next morning ("hair of the dog") will lessen the impacts of the hangover. The authors also note that red wine and amber liquors have been found to cause more headaches.

And if you're reading this the next morning, with a hangover, doctors tell ABC News the best ways to cope include sleeping it off and drinking plenty of fluids.
