Roadside bomb kills Marine in Afghanistan

By Cindy Heflin

Marine Lance Cpl. Dominic J. Ciaramitaro, of South Lyon, was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, according to media reports.

Ciaramitaro, 19, died April 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, a Marine Corps press release said. Ciaramitaro's father, John Ciaramitaro, is a co-owner of the Whitmore Lake Tavern, his business partner Tom Lombardi said. Ciaramitaro was an antitank missile man assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C., the military said. He joined the Marine Corps in November 2009 and was promoted to lance corporal on Jan. 1. Ciaramitaro was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in December 2010, the military said.

Ciaramitaro's grandmother, Susan Boston, of Haslett, Mich., told the South Lyon Herald that her grandson was in a four-vehicle convoy in the gunner position when it was hit by the bomb.

Ciaramitaro had been decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Deepest sympathies to the family. We here at home take for granted the safety of our homes. While the families of our young men and women must live on pins and needles every minute their children are in harms way.

As a Viet Nam veteran myself I extend my deepest sympathy to the family of Lance Cpl. Dominic Ciaramitaro. I was just one of the luck one's that was able to come home mostly in one piece. Never realized at the time, 19 yrs. old, how my parents and family were dealing with my year of service in a combat area.

Any person that serves our county is in the top 10% in my book especially in the USMC! My hometown has lost a hero.

My sympathies to his family. Where do we get these brave young people who help keep us safe and free? God bless them all and may He comfort Cpl. Ciaramitaro's family and welcome him into Heaven.

My condolences to the family and my thanks to Lance Cpl. Dominic J. Ciaramitaro, for serving our country. I also regret that on this same day he has to share a web page with another now locally infamous 19 year old man. Lance Cpl. Ciaramitaro is much more deserving of our time, energy and resulting comments.
