The Rockin’ for the Hungry food drive has met its campaign goal of collecting 200 tons of food, Food Gatherers announced Monday.

The drive began Dec. 5, when Food Gatherers volunteers collected food donations outside of the Kroger store at 400 S. Maple Road. Part of the event included live, on-location broadcasts by the radio station AnnArbor’s 107one.

The final Rockin’ for the Hungry broadcast on AnnArbor’s 107one Dec. 9 marked a collection of 150 tons of food. Extending the campaign for a week brought in enough donations for the organization to reach its goal.

“Our deepest thanks to all the Ann Arbor’s 107one radio personalities and folks behind the scenes who make this annual event possible,” said Eileen Spring, president and CEO of Food Gatherers, in a news release. “Through the determination of the radio station, Kroger and our community, we have met this Rockin’ goal which will have a tremendous and immediate impact on our daily hunger relief efforts.”

Food Gatherers is the largest food bank program in Washtenaw County, and distributes more than 5 million pounds of food to organizations that serve low-income adults, seniors and children per year.
