Rollover crash snarls traffic on U.S.-23 near Washtenaw Ave.

By Sven Gustafson

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office says all lanes of northbound U.S.-23 have been re-opened following a rollover crash near Washtenaw Avenue.

Police issued an advisory time-stamped 3:06 p.m. They earlier had issued an statement advising motorists to avoid the northbound lanes of the freeway and were routing traffic off the freeway at Washtenaw Avenue.

A 911 dispatcher said the accident involved a rollover crash into the median and that several other motorists stopped to try and assist. There was no immediate information on injuries.

The incident also temporarily forced the shutdown of one of the southbound lanes of the freeway.

AnnArbor.com left a message with sheriff's office spokesman Derrick Jackson.

For whatever reason, US 23 is a very dangerous road. It does seem that there are serious accidents every other week. Maybe some kind of traffic calming measures need to be implemented?

It is dangerous because it was made in the 1950's was not designed for the amount of traffic volumes like we see today.

What exactly is a traffic calming measure?

As the lady is deceased I don't think she can tell anyone why "she did it". The fact remains another death on Washtenaw County highways. Rest in peace, Mrs Brush.

I've seen several accidents there.....when you drive it, the curve isn't banked properly. I have spoken with many people who agree, including a road commission person. It is the BANKING of that curve that is a problem. My grandson saw an accident there a while back watching a car in front of him rolling down the embankment....it really affected him.

I disagree, there is no "horrible" curve there. To me a horrible curve is like the one where you exit west-bound M-14 onto the Barton Drive exit. According to the link you posted she had been traveling in the fast (left) lane, went off the lane to the left into the median and then jerked the wheel back to the right and over corrected sending her car into a roll-over situation. No one has said why she did this. But on a Sunday the traffic would not have been like rush hour on a week day.

I just got on the highway and a MSP officer went around me, traffic already backing up. I am a new user to a cell phone and now more than ever do I notice people on them, driving or otherwise. I fought it for the longest time, I was happy with my land line. As I was crawling in traffic from this accident and glancing at others in the other lane, almost everyone was talking to someone. Yes, phones are great for such emergencies, but I can't help but feel the majority of crashes this day and age are somehow phone-related. Where I used to be able to be a somewhat relaxed passenger and enjoy a ride, I can't anymore. There is usually someone weaving, nearing or crossing the center line. People really need to stop using them when they drive.

Might be but cell phones have also really SLOWED traffic down. Folks seem to want to stop at traffic lights-maybe to check their e mail ? The days of 2--3 cars going through the yellow lights are rare but it used to happen all the time 30 years ago. Yeah brakes are better today but not that much better. Drivers don't "push" like in the past, they don't need to rush home to use the phone.

I agree but not sure that is what happened here. That is a dangerous curve....and there have been many accidents there. In my post below the up to date details are at the Detroit News site.

6:35pm and no update on what happened here. Blaming the roadways seems to be a common thing now. I say blame the careless driving that is rampant now. Everyone seems to be driving like a bat out of hell without regard for anyone around them now. Arrogance abounds. People seem to not know how to enter a freeway, how much space to leave between the car in front of them or how to change lanes safely. Maybe private driving schools are a joke.

Does the public schools still offer driver ed ? I know S.S. doesn't even test current drivers--there used to be a written test you had to take to renew your drivers license, today they just test your vision-if that, last year the gal believe my eye sight was just fine just by looking at me, I just had to pay the renew fee and got another license for 4 more years. A big joke S.S. has become, all it does today is collect money-forget educating the drivers. S.S. used to have books "what every driver must know", I haven't seen one of those in many years.

The accident was definitely on the Northbound side. And it had nothing to do with the exits at Washtenaw. It was North of there.

The entrance ramp to northbound US-23 from eastbound Washtenaw Avenue was closed, but once I got on it from Geddes, I saw a line of bumper-to-bumper traffic in the southbound lanes, all the way to eastbound M-14; it gave me the impression that the accident took place in the southbound lanes.

I don't know what the solution might be, but it seems that something must be done to amend this location. It feels like a crash/accident occurs at this exit weekly, if not closer to daily. I hope those involved are okay.

It starts with the drivers, something is wrong when folks crash everyday on the local freeways no matter what the weather is like. There is more to safe driving then just not speeding and drinking and driving and wearing your safety belts, way more yet some folks feel if they just do that everything else doesn't matter. Double lane changes right before your exit--no problem if traffic isn't around some people believe. How folks lose control and end up in a crash.
