"Deputies believe the suspect entered the home through an unlocked door sometime during the day. There are no suspects at this time." – Now if I were writing an article about this incident, I'd likely go for skillful use of language in the following manner: "Deputies speculate that an unknown suspect entered the home through an unlocked door." This would eliminate the need for the entire 2nd sentence (and possibly avoid jokes about "no suspects" committing this crime). I also agree with those asking for a more specific use of the word "safe" as well - commercial ads use "safe" when they often mean a comparatively small & light weight lock box (aka, "strong box"). Was it a true safe or a lock box? There's a reason for using the word "safe" when talking about theft prevention. In addition, since this article is lacking in other relevant information, it just makes sense to focus on what could be told - and that's mostly about what was used to prevent theft of a gun.

Having a safe in an unlocked house is sort of like remembering both your belt and your suspenders, but forgetting to put on your pants before you leave home.

Was thinking the same thing only I like your clever analogy better than anything I could have come up with.

Another stolen firearm. It's no wonder that people don't want to centrally register handgun ownership information, as it can most readily be used to point thieves and criminals in the direction of gun owners.

Was it a safe or a locked box just sitting on a shelf in the closet

I know that you chose to show Prospect Road highlighted instead of labeled, like the other roads are, but I recognized which road is Prospect Road on the map because a few years ago, I would regularly take Ford Road to get to Canton on Saturdays, seeing the Superior Township Fire Department there at the corner of Ford and Prospect.
