Saline Farmers Market vendor who dressed as Mrs. Claus killed in weekend accident

By Sven Gustafson

A woman known for dressing up as Mrs. Santa Claus during Decembers at the Saline Farmers Market died after being involved in a head-on crash on Michigan Avenue, The Saline Post reported.

Pam Zibbell, 55, of Adrian, died Saturday following an accident on Michigan Avenue at Feldkamp Road. She and her husband, Bradley, were traveling to the market, where they regularly sold handmade sweets, cookies and other items and dressed as Mrs. and Mr. Santa Claus during December.

Firefighters from Saline used hydraulic tools to free Zibbell from the vehicle, the Post reported. Three others involved in the crash — including Bradley Zibbell — were transported to the University of Michigan Hospital.

Authorities said snowfall early Saturday left the roads icy and slippery.

A spokeswoman for the U-M Hospital said Tuesday that Bradley Zibbell remains in good condition.

Have heard that Michigan Ave west of Saline city limits is not very well attended to. Glad that I don't have to travel that stretch of road very often. Unfortunately for those that live in Lenawee County and work in Washtenaw they must travel it every day.

Even on nice weather that stretch of road between Saline and Clinton is deadly. It's a two lane road (except for the small areas that have the passing lane incorporated) with 55mph speed limit where many drivers will do 60+mph. Even after the road is tended to after snow, it drifts and ices over with nothing but open fields on either side of the road. Furthermore, anyone traveling from Lenawee to Washtenaw County will have to deal with the sun rising and setting right through their windshield a couple times per year.

Icy roads might injure and kill more people then drunk drivers.Maybe someday there be a crackdown on icy roads. Salt works but somebody has to spread it on the roads.

30,000+ senseless fatalities annually. . . in all climates, at all hours of the day, and with all manner of operational skill, or level of inebriation. . .the Country needs an open, honest dialogue about these dangerous devices. We should consider an outright ban on their ownership and use.

This reminds us of the sad fact that cars are very dangerous, despite the enormous safety improvements. It isn't ice - it's cars. And the speeds were routinely operate them at - even at the low range of 25-35 mph - are still very dangerous speeds.
