Lodi Township homeowner wrestles intruder to the ground; deputies also arrest suspect's wife
A Lodi Township homeowner wrestled an intruder to the ground and held him until police arrived after the intruder, who was armed with a hammer, entered his house on Tuesday, police said.
The intruder also raised a hammer at the female resident in the home, but no one was injured in the incident, reports said.
The man and woman were inside their home in the 7000 block of Lindemann Road at 12:11 p.m. when they heard a noise in the kitchen, according to a media summary. The woman went to investigate and discovered a stranger in the kitchen, who raised a hammer at the woman, the summary said.
The woman fell back, but was not struck, the summary said.
The intruder attempted to run out of a side door, and the male resident grabbed him, the summary said. They fell onto the deck, and the woman called 911 as the man wrestled with the intruder and held him down.
Deputies arrived and saw the suspected burglar pinned down by the homeowner, the summary said. They arrested the 48-year-old Saline man and learned his getaway vehicle was still in the area, the summary said.
Other deputies stopped that vehicle in the area of Diuble Road and Pleasant Lake Road and determined the driver, who is the 42-year-old wife of the suspected intruder, was involved, the summary said.
The husband and wife accused in the home invasion were transported to the county jail, and the case was turned over to prosecutors to review for criminal charges.
No further details were immediately available this evening.

leaguebus: If you only knew the whole story. If we would just give our money i.e. unemployment and things to the scums the crime rate would drop?????? Is that what you are suggesting Deborah? We all know there was no crime before Engler, Right???? I love how the libs always find ways to blame the hard working citizens, of failed liberal policy. GUN CONTROL only controls the law abiding.

Lead to the chest at high velocity removes all possibility of a repeated situation by the one in the casket and saves tax payers lots of money. It would also act as a great learning tool to someone who might think they can get away with this. The many ways that scum can get reduced punishments is why so many keep trying. As more and more scum are put into pine boxes the others that are fence sitting will get off on the right side of the fence. We need to remove the Threat of punishment and make it a promise. No appeals past the pine box level, it is supreme.

Well, lucky for the robber the female victim called 911, cause township relatives and friends believe in the general rule of law: Shoot em', Shovel em' and Shut up!

Wth? Defending yourself in your home and stopping a threat is a far cry from "imposing capital punishment. Wow just wow. Why dont you advocate for homeowners to just lay down and submit to a bludgeoning or be charged with assault and battery for not just having an open house for them?

he turned on his wife, nice guy. as people realize that there is nothing for them after unemployment runs out(thank you Engler republicans)there is nothing but food stamps and what ever you can do to keep a roof over your head is an option and some people turn to crime. Crime rates are tied to the economy not enforcement efforts and certainly not the lock em up and throw away the key mentality.

Please Mr Washtenaw County Prosecutor - do NOT plea bargain the charges down to something trivial as you are prone to do. This was a home invasion and he threatened deadly force to an unarmed resident. If you let him go you will start to get what some are advocating here - using a weapon and imposing capital punishment under protection of the castle doctrine law. Let's give them a fair trial for ALL the laws they broke.

Where did it say they were on the deck? I read the man was in the kitchen. Who says guns are supposed to be locked up? What expert? I would bet this is not the first time these 2 have victimized someone. With being so brazen to break in a home during the day and having the wife waiting in a getaway vehicle strongly points towards experience. The justice system wont deter these 2 from continuing to victimize civilians in the supposed safety of ones home. For the ones who think more gun control is needed, check the violent crime stats for Chicago and DC when they imposed strict gun control. The laws have since been lifted because of the +50% rise in gun violence after the laws went into effect. Guns are safe in the hands of law abiding trained people.

I'll bet they will not go to jail. They will argue that nothing was taken, it was mistaken identity or address (craigslist pickup). They were there to pick up Grandma's laundry. First time offense (caught, actually). The drugs made me do it. And on and on and on. The jails are full. These two will wait a few weeks and do it again. The paperwork that the homeowners will have to deal with in order to prosecute these two is more than 17 pages: value of items taken, covered by insurance or not, damage to property, estimates from 3 licensed builders and pictures, statement from insurance carrier, medical records, and of course the countersuit by the intruders for assault and battery. And of course, the calls from their 'friends' and family begging for leniency or threatening to kill your dog. Don't ask how I know. The intruders count on this to avoid prosecution because its too much trouble for the homeowner/renter. Keeping a weapon on hand 24/7 just isn't practical. Doors locked during the day is an insult to sensibility. The gun's are supposed to be locked up, remember? Other wise, you can be charged for brandishing or gross endangerment (they were on the deck, not in the home: the prosecutor can argue that the threat was gone; that you should have let them go). These two will probably get a new car out of their winnings. The liberal, sympathetic, lenient, lengthy, and templated justice system in this country has made crime a profitable business at all levels of victim's income.

As a Lodi township resident, I'd like to extend my congratulations to the homeowner and the officers. And I'm glad that they did not have to resort to lethal force. The burglar and his wife are exactly where they out to be - in jail, not the morgue.

Michigan also has a law that says if you feel your life is in danger of being taken you can use lethal force to quell the threat. House Bill #5143 google it

A double tap to the center body mass would have stopped this scum from ever doing another home invasion again and maybe his widowed wife would learn something too...maybe. Classic example of why law abiding citizens should arm themselves to protect their families and property.

Great. I live in Lodi too. Time to check the locks and make sure the windows/doors are locked. Glad to hear no one was hurt in this incident.

Regarding self defense in home invasion or similar situations - Michigan has a "Castle Doctrine law". MCL 780.951 (Public Act 311 of 2006). Basically, a jury needs to believe that you were under great threat to life or limb - you are then allowed by law to defend yourself with lethal force, not just a gun either - any lethal force. Also - there is no Civil Liability if Self Defense is allowed - so the perpetrator can not sue you in a self-defense situation. http://www.ammoland.com/2009/08/03/michigans-castle-doctrine-law-and-you/

This had to be horrifying for the homeowners. I am guessing that they left doors unlocked. I wonder if this was really at noon or if the police report meant to say midnight....if they were awake didn't they hear this person entering the house?

nephilim, I believe mbill was just wondering about motivation, not making excuses. no need to be so quick to judge. And yes, a lot of the time, addicts prowl and prey in this manner. And yes, it sounds like an act of desperation. Good job for the man who wrestled him to the ground and to the deputies who followed up and arrested his wife. NO excuses for such criminal actions. One can only hope that these two have the courage to learn from this and do better when they get out of jail. Sometimes it takes hitting bottom hard to wake some people up.
