Saline police say driver led officers on high-speed chase, jumped from moving vehicle

By Art Aisner

Saline police are seeking charges against an Ann Arbor man who led officers on a high-speed chase and apparently bailed from the vehicle while it was still moving.

Officers were patrolling Austin Road outside the city at about 11 p.m. July 9 as part of a countywide drunken-driving enforcement initiative when a vehicle sped by, going about 85 mph in a 55 mph zone, reports said.

Officers turned around and followed the vehicle westbound on Austin Road with their lights and sirens activated for about a mile at speeds approaching 100 mph. Upon entering Bridgewater Township, the driver abruptly turned left on Kaiser Road and continued southbound for roughly half a mile before officers saw the vehicle veer over to the right of the roadway and stop in tall grass.

Officers found a man in the passenger seat with his leg draped over the center console and pressing on the brake, reports said. He told police the driver jumped out of the vehicle, and he was forced to stop it.

Officers arrested the passenger and placed him in the back of the patrol car. He said the driver was a co-worker and friend who invited him out to Wamplers Lake earlier in the day. They had been drinking during the day and were on their way back to the lake after picking up firewood when the officers tried to pull them over, reports said.

The man was taken to the police department, where he was released and picked up by friends.

While at the scene, officers were approached by a neighbor who said he just returned and noticed his cabin door was locked from the inside and window screen was displaced.

They entered the cabin through the window, but no one was found inside. The same man later reported some items were found out of place but he was unsure if anything was missing.

Police identified the driver as a 48-year-old Ann Arbor man but have been unable to contact him. They also determined the vehicle had a license plate with altered tabs and will seek several charges, including fleeing and eluding police.

This guy sounds like a real winner. Forty eight years on this planet and not an ounce of responsibility to show for it. Excellent. And to bail out of the car, leaving your friend behind to deal with police? What a pal.
