Saline students, others text and fundraise for Haiti
While Saturday, Haiti officially ended its search and rescue efforts for earthquake survivors, there remains a great need for aid. And Saline High students are using their cell phones to help make that happen.
Students of Saline High School have created a special text-for-Haiti opportunity called "SHS Text for $10,000."
On Friday at 1:25 p.m., students took five minutes to text a $10 donation to the American Red Cross if they had a signed permission slip. Between that texting time and lunch donations from students raised more than $4,000.

While the students didn't reach their initial goal of $10,000, Saline High teacher Brian Lampman said the school will continue to accept donations through this Thursday.
Future soccer games between the Saline High School and the
Pioneer High School mens and womens programs will be used to raise
donations for the people of Haiti.
Saline High School also plans to create an American Red Cross Club.
"We have committed, caring students who really want to make a positive difference," Lampman said, noting that students Haley Breedveld, Grace Bowe, Arianna Wellings, Jaime Davis and Kate Laramie spearheaded the project. Jason Gumenick, chair of the school's Social Studies department also was a driving force behind this campaign.
"We hope that other schools will pick up on this idea and members of the community will also text with us," Lampman said.
The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County and Briarwood Mall are doing just that, minus the texting.
Today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Briarwood Mall, the Salvation Army is holding its Hope for Haiti fundraiser. Offering children's activities, musical performances and more, wristbands for the event cost $10.
