Man accused of drunken driving after crashing truck into mailbox, trees in Saline

By Kyle Feldscher

A man who crashed his 2011 Ford F-series pickup truck into several trees in the 200 block of Monroe Street in Saline was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Sunday.

According to a Saline police report, the man — whose name will not be released until he is arraigned on the charge — had been drinking in Ann Arbor Saturday evening. According to police, the man was traveling south on Monroe Street shortly after midnight when his truck left the roadway and struck a tree and a mailbox in front of one home and hit other trees in front of a neighboring home.

The report stated the man told police he had fallen asleep while driving.

Saline firefighters and Huron Valley Ambulance personnel treated the man at the scene of the accident. He was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he had a blood test and police interviewed him, the report stated.

The man said he had drunk five or six beers in Ann Arbor between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday. Police verbally placed the man under arrest and released him for treatment at the hospital and impounded his vehicle, according to the report.

He had been treated at the scene for possible spine injuries and was brought to the hospital on a backboard. The extent of his injuries was not known as of Monday morning.

No sympathy here for injuries sustained in a drunk driving accident for the drunk driver. Let's be sure to get a photo of the perp when it's available.

Remember the old ads "Drunk drivers go to jail." It seems that is not the case anymore. We're all lucky he didn't kill someone. When are we going to say enough is enough and It's not acceptable anymore? I saw a billboard the other day. It said "Buzzed driving is drunk driving." Seems like if you steal something you get more jail time than if you kill crash your vehicle while drunk, or even kill someone with that vehicle.

Yet another incident of senseless violence with a fully auto vehicle. Yes we should all have to pay for breathalyzer ignition interrupts. Even though I don't drink and I drive responsibly sure we should pay for this technology...for the sake of the children you know.

I don't need a breath analysis to start my car. I need the penalties for drunk driving to be so severe that someone will think hard before doing it. We also need penalties for the establishments where they are serving these people drink after drink and then allowing them to stumble out the door into society with their car keys.

If politicians voted for that, how would they get home from the bar?

Drinking and driving is looking for a place for an accident to happen....and it did. Tree/trees, mail box are easy to replace. Thank God it wasn't another human or auto. (the man said he had drunk 5 or 6 beers) I guess he was beyond using the work drank.
