Saline City Council approves bid for $200K non-motorized trail

By Julie Baker

The Saline City Council on Monday approved a $202,481.02 bid to complete a non-motorized trail that runs from the Saline District Library to the Depot Museum, according to a Saline Reporter story.

Pavex Corp. will complete the paving project, which will stretch from the library on Maple Road to Harris Street, the report said. The project will be paid for by the city, library, county and the CARES fund.

Quoted selections are from the Saline Reporter (Saline Distorter): "We've been working with the library for a while on the trail," Fordice said. -Was this previously announced? An earlier article mentioned nothing about the paving project: http://heritage.com/articles/2012/07/16/saline_reporter/news/doc4ffeefd9afca5492292464.txt "The city received four bids Sept. 4. The other three bids ranged from $225,000 to $227,000. Pavex's original bid, but after Fordice corrected some minor math errors, the new total was $3,000 lower." -What were the "minor math errors" that resulted in $3000? Did the Saline DPW Director make the mistake or the contractor? Can the director alter bids, even though the result was lower? Is this the Pavex company from New Jersey, Arizona, or Trenton, MI? Last time I checked, the distance between these two locations was less than a mile on paved sidewalks. This is a waste of tax money, and is also not carbon friendly. I would rather see Saline try and be sustainable, or fix current roads/sidewalks, rather then support pet projects for a trail that just intersects sidewalks and streets.

Sorry but I thought there already was a trail there? I know it goes to Harris at least. Are they talking about extending it? It does seem like a lot of money if you are just going from Harris to Maple.

Community improvements like this are what motivates folks to move to Saline. I suspect most folks will not use the paths but when it comes time to sell their house or boast about their community it will be a selling point. People rant about the money spent on such things but it helps the community.

Yeah! Who needs sidewalks! People should just drive everywhere! All money should go to roads! Why should there be a path from a library to a museum!

Walking through the park was so hard we had to spend 1/4 million to pave it? What a waste of money.
