Saline District Library announces 'Ferrari-fast' Internet connection

By Lisa Allmendinger

The Saline District Library recently upgraded its Internet service to a fiber-optic connection.

The new MeritFiber Internet connection is “Ferrari-fast,” said Leslee Niethammer, Saline District Library’s director. The library is connected with a fiber-optic connection from Merit Network, a networking provider for Michigan’s education and research community.

Niethammer said the library was was one of the first libraries in the county to offer Internet access to patrons about 15 years ago.

Since then, the library has consistently upgraded its Internet resources to meet the growing demand of the community, she said.

“Our patrons are using the Internet differently today than they were even three years ago,” Niethammer said “We’re very pleased to offer the speeds enabled by our new connection.”

Saline District Library is part of The Library Network (TLN), a public library cooperative serving 65 libraries in Southeast Michigan. The new connection will bring more of the state’s collection to patrons at faster speeds.

I believe this is the new Merit REACH-3MC project, not the old Merit network that's been around for a long time.

Congrats on catching up to most libraries circa 2007. Why did it take so long?
