Saline firefighters aim to collect more than 1,300 donations for Toys for Tots

By Art Aisner

Saline firefighters are again teaming up with a local musical group to help make the holiday season a bit more enjoyable for underprivileged children.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Fiddlers ReStrung Holiday and Hometown Concert will benefit local and regional collection efforts for the fire department’s Toys For Tots campaign, officials said.

The show begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5 at the Saline High School Performing Arts Center.

Attendees may bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation, which will be collected by U.S. Marines from the Selfridge Air Force Base.

Saline Fire Chief Craig Hoeft estimated more than 130 Saline-area children under the age of 12 won't get Christmas gifts without the program. Last year, the campaign received more than 1,300 toys, and he said expectations are even higher this year.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. They are available in advance by calling 734-944-2283.

Anyone unable to attend the concert is encouraged to drop off donations at the Saline Area Fire Department at 205 E. Michigan Ave. by Dec. 19. All excess toys will be shared for distribution with Toys For Tots programs across Southeast Michigan.

This is a great program. Kids are completely innocent in their circumstance whatever it may be. They deserve our full support and attention year round so they feel safe, secure and have the best opportunities.
