Saline ranks in top 10 of Michigan high schools

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Saline High School is ranked No. 9 among Michigan's high schools, according to new U.S. News & World Report rankings, MLive.com reported.

The school ranked No. 525 nationally.

The top Michigan schools were Bloomfield Hills' International Academy (1) and Holland's Black River Public School (2). Schools in Grosse Pointe, Okemos, Frankenmuth, Troy, Grand Rapids, Spring Lake and Portage rounded out the top 10, according to MLive.

Schools were analyzed at the state level on performance on state exams, taking into account the test scores of disadvantaged students who tend to score lower. Schools then were ranked on how well they prepare students for college, analyzing success in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs, both of which include college-level courses, MLive reported.

Pioneer and Huron high schools in Ann Arbor were ranked 19 and 20, respectively.

What a great achievement! We should reward the teachers by cutting their pay and benefits!

@towny: The results for Milan High School per the link in the news story above: Students not proficient in reading, 36%, Students not proficient in math, 51%. The results for Manchester High School: Students not proficient in reading, 21%, Students not proficient in math, 40%. Again, these results are scandalous. We are failing to educate a significant number of our children. What will we do about it?

Towny, I have my opinion...and great data to back it up.

I disagree. Both Milan and Manchester are better schools in this area. Everyone has a different opinion.

Saline's administration and teachers must be reasonably organized and genuinely want their students to succeed. Sadly, the same can't always be said of other schools.

@samshoe and Dog Guy - Yup, they pay their teachers the highest out of area school districts. Even more than Ann Arbor. On the whole they seem to be attracting and retaining high quality teachers (except when they just hire from their own community and promote people to admin. positions who shouldn't be promoted).

No, but they do have a program in the Middle School called Bring Your Own Device to School program. http://goo.gl/hZEQG I wouldn't be surprised if they have it in the high school too. The Saline Area Schools are doing a number of things right these days.
