Saline teen charged after police say he tried to sell stolen GPS unit back to victim on Craigslist

By Art Aisner

A 17-year-old high school student from Saline has been charged with two counts of larceny from a motor vehicle stemming from a string of thefts of GPS units reported earlier this month, court records show.

Myles Debol also is charged with one misdemeanor count of receiving and concealing stolen property. He is awaiting formal arraignment on the charges and will be given the opportunity to turn himself in, Saline Police Det. Don Lupi said.

Police arrested Debol on April 7 in a coordinated sting with one of the victims who had a GPS unit taken from her vehicle on April 3, and later found it for sale on Craigslist.org.

Debol is a pitcher on the Saline High School baseball team and has been temporarily suspended from the team pending the outcome of the investigation, high school spokesman Steve Laatsch said.

The 35-year-old victim of the GSP theft told police the device was taken from her unlocked car, which was parked overnight outside her residence in the 100 block of Harper Drive. Officers encouraged her to check websites where it could be listed for sale, and she called a few days later indicating she found a device similar to hers listed for sale by another Saline resident, police reports said. The item was listed for sale just a few hours after she believes it was stolen.

She had numerous contacts with the seller, who said that particular unit was already spoken for but that he had two others she could see. The woman set up a meeting at a gas station near downtown while an officer in an unmarked car watched from a nearby parking lot. The officer approached after the seller handed her two units with the power cords attached, police said.

The man identified himself as Myles Debol and cooperated fully with the officer, reports said. He was arrested and helped police retrieve the third GPS device, which belonged to the victim. Police determined the other two devices were stolen from other vehicles parked in the city sometime overnight from April 2 to April 3.

Debol did not have an attorney on file with the court and did not return messages seeking comment. His parents could not immediately be reached Friday.

What is going on with our youth today? I remember when I was a kid, my parents had expectations of me. I played sports in High School, attended practices, studied and got good grades, AND stayed out of trouble.

Side note: People should be careful about their Facebook preferences. I'm sure that Myles' 509 friends would agree.

To clarify, juveniles in Michigan are defined as "persons under the age of seventeen".

Seventeen year olds are NOT minors under the law.

I thought that this young adult was a product of our public education system. "Debol is a pitcher on the Saline High School baseball team"

Read a little closer. It say ... and Myles Debol is also charged.

Not sure if it's one guy or two. It says MD also is charged but might mean MD is also charged. There's a big difference.

It is poorly worded ("Myles Debol also is charged), but suggests MD is the only person charged. "A 17-year-old high school student from Saline has been charged with two counts of larceny from a motor vehicle stemming from a string of thefts of GPS units reported earlier this month, court records show. Myles Debol also is charged with one misdemeanor count of receiving and concealing stolen property." Rod's not asking whether he was charged as a juvenile, but pointing that he is a minor (i.e., under 18).

How is it that you post the name of a minor charged with a crime? Isn't that a no-no?
