Saline to host Brandon Inge, other Tigers players at Susan Komen cancer research fundraiser

By Alana West

Brandon Inge and several other members of the Detroit Tigers baseball team will be the main attraction at a benefit auction in Saline July 1 for a cancer research fundraiser.

The Bid for a Cure fundraiser will include autographs from the players, a live auction with such offerings as 18 tickets for Brandon Inge's luxury suite at Comerica Park to watch Tigers batting practice, a beer and wine tent, music and food.

The Tigers players, including Inge, Rick Porcello, and Joel Zumaya, will sign autographs. Five dollars will purchase a card that all will sign.

Dexter resident Kate Mittenthal, who is helping to organize the event, said it will help raise money for a team of participants in the Susan G. Komen three-day breast cancer walk that will take place in the fall. Each participant has to raise $2,300 to walk. The walking team includes six women in Michigan and 13 in Boston, she said.

Saline City Council members unanimously approved the fundraiser, to be hosted by the Brecon Grille, Monday. It will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on South Ann Arbor Street from Michigan Avenue to Henry Street and include performances by the band Verve Pipe and others. Mittenthal said she expects 10 Tigers players to participate in the autograph signing. “We’re gearing this toward young people,” she said, adding that there will also be caricature artists and face painting.

Admission to the event will be $5 for those over 21 and free to those younger. Mittenthal expects from 2,000 to 5,000 to attend.

“We had a small event in Dexter (last fall),” she said. “We just had Brandon Inge from 4 p.m. until the restaurant closed, and it was not as highly publicized, and we had a lot of people.”

I may have only an Ann Arbor public schools education but the articel says "hosted" by the Brecon Grill. It doesn't say who supports it. I happen to supprt it but I am not giving to it or gaining anything from it. Stop whining.

@Amalie Nash: Yes, I can read, "the contents of the comment were about more than the Brecon Grille owner's support of the event...". Though, I am sure there are other supporters of this event then just Brecon Grille. I support this event, am I being thanked? There are other sponsors, though maybe this should be reflected in the reporting and not left to the comments section. For some reason that is not described in his post, he mentioned Brecon Grille exclusively. How is Brecon Grille sponsoring this event...money, free food and drinks to the commentor? From the reporting, it sounds like the event is outside, where there are at least eight other businesses in the general area. Where is the thank you to Little Caesars, Excalibur Barber Shop, or Mac's Acadian Seafood Shack? Hey, I will even return the favor and thank Mr. Rhoads for his support of this wonderful event by posting his website: http://www.davidrhoadssaline.com/

Yes, this event is great for Saline, but seriously...promoting the Brecon Grille in the comments section...is this spam? Why not comment on how Paul is supporting this event instead of the shameless promotion?

This is going to be one of many great events in Saline this summer. Not only will it provide entertainment and an opportunity to visit with new and old friends but it will also raise funds to help with cancer research. We are thankful to the members of the Detroit Tigers who are giving of their time to support this event and to Paul G, the owner of Brecon Grille.
