Super Kicker Rodeo riding into town Friday-Sunday

By Lisa Allmendinger

Attention all young mutton busters: The Super Kicker Rodeo, which takes place in Lodi Township, just outside Saline, has a class for you to try your sheep-riding skills this weekend.

For the 40th year, the Super Kicker Rodeo will take over the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds Friday through Sunday featuring bull, barrel and bronco riders.

Stan Poet, manager of the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, said this is the third year that the class has been offered for kids 50 pounds or less. The announcer will let kids know when they can sign up for the event that takes place at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights and at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

"Just grab a handful of wool and away you go," Poet said.

Poet said the prices have dropped for this year’s event and are $10 for adults, $5 for children age 5-12. Kids age 1-5 are free.

In addition, there will be inflatables for young children. Plus, there’s also a mechanical bull available for those darling enough to try riding it.

“This is good family fun,” he said and there’s “excellent food available for sale as well.”

The shows begin Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m. and tickets can be purchased in advance at LaFontaine Dodge in Saline, Local Tractor Supply in Dundee, Lakeside Saddlery in Whitmore Lake and the Lodi Food Mart in Saline.

The Farm Council Grounds are located at 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road.

While Mr. Poet claims that this rodeo "is good family fun," I highly doubt this is any fun for the animals involved in this cruel and barbaric show. It is common practice at rodeos to use electric prods, bucking/flank straps, spurs, and other instruments to inflict pain upon the animals in these shows in order to agitate them. It is absolutely disgusting that in this day and age, in an area that is as highly educated as Saline, that events such as rodeos are tolerated and allowed to continue. Hopefully Saline area residents will boycott this event and work to keep it out of our community in the future. Shame on the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds for allowing this blatant display of animal cruelty to take place on their property.
