Three people displaced after fire in Saline

By Lee Higgins

A family of three was displaced after a fire this morning destroyed a garage at a Saline home and left the house with smoke and water damage, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the 4:32 a.m. blaze that started in an attached garage in the 300 block of Berkshire Drive, Saline Area Fire Chief Craig Hoeft said. The cause is under investigation, but Hoeft said there's nothing to indicate it's suspicious.

Hoeft said a smoke detector went off, prompting the residents to evacuate. Firefighters arrived within 7 minutes of receiving the call and had the fire under control in about 20 minutes, he said. Sixteen firefighters responded.

The fire was contained to the garage, but because the house had smoke and water damage, the family won't be able to live there for several weeks until it's cleaned up, he said. Hoeft said the family made arrangements to stay with other family members in the area.

Damage was estimated at $40,000 to $50,000, he said.
