Semi truck accident closes down lane on U.S. 23 in Milan

By John Counts

Update at 10:13 a.m.: All lanes of U.S. 23 have been reopened in Milan, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

A collision between a semi truck and a garbage truck had one lane closed on northbound U.S. 23 near Plank Road in Milan around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

As of 10:15 a.m., the freeway was open, but crews were still attempting to remove the semi from a ditch, said Sgt. Dave Buchko with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The Milan Area Fire Department was first dispatched to the accident at 6:38 a.m. Lt. Fred Evans said the accident, which involved a garbage truck and a food services semi truck, forced authorities to close down part of the freeway in order to get wreckers in place to tow the vehicles.

Buchko said the semi hit the garbage truck. The driver of the semi suffered minor injuries and was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, authorities said.

The accident, which occurred in Monroe County, is being investigated by the sheriff's office there.

No other information was immediately available.
