September in July: Mild summer temperatures and rain on tap for the weekend

By Kyle Feldscher

It's going to feel a lot like autumn here in Washtenaw County this weekend, as temperatures fall and rain clouds rise just in time for the Beer Festival in Ypsilanti.

Coming to you from Ashley's in Ann Arbor for this week's Weather ... Or Not, I'm finally back after a vacation and breaking news-induced hiatus for the last two weeks. A big thanks to Kellie Woodhouse for admirably filling in for me during my Montana vacation (it was great, thanks for asking!).

Unfortunately, I don't have great news to bring you this weekend — temperatures will be in the mid-70s for much of the weekend with a good chance of rain every day. I don't expect that to put a damper on the festivities at the Michigan Brewers' Guild Summer Beer Festival at Riverside Park tonight and Saturday at all.

Ok gotta ask it.How is this cool weather caused by global warming ?

The weather has changed since the beginning of the planet's history. However, due to industrialization and pollution, weather change has accelerated recently, for the worse (i.e. making the planet less hospitable towards life). If you are attempting to be coy about being a climate change denier, it's not having the desired result. It comes off as a lack of scientific literacy and an unwillingness to learn.

so in other words the weather has been changing for thousands of years

Hi tdw. To understand climate change, you have to look at the overall temperatures year-over-year and over the landmass in its entirety (for our purposes here, the U.S.) For example, the temperatures last year on average in the United States were the highest since we began recording them in the 1800s. We can experience stretches of cool weather in particular regions, but the overall temperature has increased. If you would like an example of direct effects of climate change, look into the situation in Greenland. The country used to be covered in permafrost for a significant portion of the year. That portion of the year has been steadily decreasing. To better understand the effects of climate change, and the importance of ice in the overall earth system, check out the book "World Without Ice" by Henry Pollack, PHD. (disclosure: I provide technical support to Henry at my day job and the business I run on the side hosts his website)

Sorry about the audio static. We didn't notice it until we got back in the office. We'll have it fixed next week.
