Serial fire starter heading back to prison for Augusta Township arson

By Art Aisner

A paroled serial arsonist who burned down an Augusta Township home over the summer will face up to 10 years in prison, a Washtenaw County judge recently ruled.

Gregory Craig, 45, will serve a mandatory sentence of at least three years on one count of arson of a dwelling for the June fire that gutted a home in the 7000 block of Talladay Road.

Circuit Judge David Swartz denied Craig credit for time served since his arrest and ordered the sentence to be served after he completes time for parole violations stemming from his prior arson convictions in 2002, court records show.

Craig was paroled in 2008 after serving more than six years for his role in a string of arson fires at Ypsilanti homes. No one was seriously injured in any of the blazes.

The home Craig destroyed in Augusta was vacant at the time, police said. Michigan State Police troopers arrested him near the scene shortly after responding to the fire. Prosecutors dropped one count of breaking and entering with intent to commit arson and being a habitual offender.

Art, was there any attempt by the police to tie this guy to the fires in Ann Arbor last fall? I seem to remember speculation they could be related but have read nothing about it since.
