The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday for a storm system that may develop near the Ann Arbor area.

The watch area is approximately along 50 miles east and west of a line from 10 miles northwest of Bad Axe to 35 miles south of Ann Arbor. A watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area, according to a weather alert.

Hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas, the weather service said.

We've been hearing thunder to the north of us for about a half hour now. Radar shows most of the heavy stuff to the north but smaller stuff around Ann Arbor. I guess it's forming in the area as well as coming in.
